Description:Triple Vinyl gatefold LP compiled by Miles Cleret and Jeremy Spellacey, includes a large 8 page booklet with detailed liner notes, record scans and never-seen-before photos. Soundway Records presents a collection of Nigerian music chronicling a time when drum machines, synthesisers, imported pop, reggae, disco and soul collided with highlife, juju and cultural music. The late 70s saw a period of political turbulence and prompted change across the country. Following suit, musicians and producers entered a period of experimentation, adaptation, modification and innovation, using new technology to renew and refresh cultural traditions. Nigerians ]formed their own unique approach to the limitless creativity these new instruments offered, to reveal a distinct sound which would dominate local airwaves for the decade to come. Nigeria Special Volume 3 celebrates the rich diversity of culture and musical styles of the nation, showcasing eighteen tracks across various genres which laid foundations for the innovation of Afrobeats artists of today. -
"Nigeria Special 3 - Electronic Innovation Meets Cult" on Vinyl Maxi from Soundway / Indigo is a compelling deep dive into Nigeria's electronic and synth-driven side, focusing on tracks that fuse local rhythms with forward-thinking studio experimentation. Rather than spotlighting individual artists, this release functions as a stylistically coherent mix of rare gems, showcasing how Nigerian producers and bands absorbed disco, boogie, early electronic and funk influences and reshaped them with Afrocentric grooves and melodic sensibilities. The result is a rich, dance-oriented selection that feels both vintage and strikingly modern, ideal for DJs, collectors and listeners who appreciate the intersection of archive research and club culture.

The musical palette spans hypnotic synth lines, tight drum-machine patterns, elastic basslines and call-and-response vocals, all anchored in unmistakably Nigerian rhythmic DNA. You'll find everything from cosmic, synth-laced Afro-disco to raw, percussive tracks with minimal, almost proto-house structures, as well as mid-tempo cuts that lean into boogie, funk and leftfield pop. This stylistic range is curated not as a random assortment, but as a narrative arc that charts how Nigerian studio innovators adapted new electronic tools to local expectations of groove, danceability and storytelling.

As a Vinyl Maxi, this edition is conceived for sound quality and DJ usability: extended versions, club-friendly track lengths and carefully remastered audio (where available) cater to those who want to play these tracks in contemporary sets or enjoy them in a focused home-listening session. The larger 12" format also allows the music's low end and percussive detail to breathe, bringing out the warmth of vintage synths and the punch of the rhythm sections.

Soundway is an acclaimed reissue and contemporary imprint known for uncovering and presenting overlooked music from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond, often in collaboration with diligent researchers and local archivists. Releases on Soundway are recognized for their careful curation, in-depth liner notes and high-quality mastering, making the label a trusted name for anyone exploring global funk, Afrobeat, tropical disco, highlife and related sounds. Indigo, as distribution and partner, helps ensure that these niche archival projects reach an international audience, bridging the gap between local musical histories and a global community of collectors, DJs and enthusiasts.

"Nigeria Special 3 - Electronic Innovation Meets Cult" continues this mission by focusing on a specific sonic chapter within Nigeria's rich musical story: the era when affordable synths, drum machines and studio technology met an already thriving culture of bands, club scenes and independent producers. It is less a nostalgia piece and more a living document, proof that the innovations of that period still resonate in today's electronic, house, nu-disco and Afro-inspired scenes. For anyone curious about how African music helped shape global dance-floor aesthetics, this Vinyl Maxi offers a concentrated, expertly curated snapshot.
