Made in the EU."Jazzloops / The Stolen Hour" on CD brings together two closely related works by bassist and composer Hugh Hopper, exploring the more atmospheric and groove-oriented side of his art. With deep, resonant bass figures, subtle electronic treatments and layered textures, these recordings move between jazz, ambient soundscapes and experimental rock, creating a cinematic listening experience that rewards both focused attention and relaxed background listening. Rhythmic loops, shifting harmonies and understated melodies give the album a hypnotic flow, while Hopper's characteristic sense of space and tone keeps the music organic and human. The CD format suits this dense, detailed production, offering warm, full-range sound ideal for Hopper's low-end presence and the fine nuances in the arrangements. "Jazzloops / The Stolen Hour" is aimed at listeners who appreciate adventurous jazz beyond traditional forms, and at fans of thoughtful, boundary-pushing instrumental music.
Hugh Hopper (1945-2009) was a pioneering British bassist and composer, best known for his work with the legendary Canterbury-scene band Soft Machine. Over the decades he developed a highly individual style, combining powerful, fuzz-driven electric bass with an exploratory compositional approach that blurred the lines between jazz, progressive rock and avant-garde music. Beyond his Soft Machine years, Hopper collaborated with key figures of European jazz and helped shape a distinctive sound that remains influential among bassists and experimental musicians. Releases such as his solo albums and numerous collaborative projects have secured his reputation as one of the most original voices on the electric bass in modern jazz and progressive music.
