 | | Description: | Across numerous albums and mixtapes, Makaya McCraven has proven his mastery of the loop akin to hiphopâ??s
most celebrated beatmakers like J Dilla and Madlib. With his new remix album, Deciphering The
Message, the Chicago-based drummer and producer digs through the Blue Note Records vaults to put a
modern bounce on classics by Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Dexter Gordon, Kenny Burrell,
and Eddie Gale, among others.
McCraven has always been a collaborative artist who prefers the energy of in-person sessions over the
isolation of creating alone. Thatâ??s no different here: Deciphering The Message features new recorded
elements from vibraphonist Joel Ross, trumpeter Marquis Hill, alto saxophonist Greg Ward, guitarists
Matt Gold and Jeff Parker, bassist Junius Paul, and Deâ??Sean Jones on tenor saxophone and flute.
The jazz album is available in the following configurations:
- CD
- LP, High Quality - Drummer, producer & beat scientist Makaya McCraven digs through the Blue Note vaults with this new remix project that puts a modern bounce on jazz classics by Art Blakey, Horace Silver, & more. McCraven's mastery of the loop is akin to hip-hop's most celebrated beatmakers like J Dilla & Madlib, both of whom have also remixed Blue Note tracks, but McCraven's unique approach also incorporates new recorded elements including his own drums, Joel Ross' vibraphone, Jeff Parker's guitar, & more."Deciphering The Message" on CD presents drummer, producer, and composer Makaya McCraven at a particularly inspired moment in his ongoing exploration of jazz's past, present, and future. Using historic recordings from the legendary Blue Note catalogue as raw material, McCraven reshapes classic themes with his signature hybrid of live performance, organic groove, and studio-based beat science. The result is a deeply musical, atmospheric journey that honors the spirit of the originals while opening them up to a new generation of listeners. Rich horn lines, warm bass, and subtly shifting drum patterns are framed by contemporary production, creating a sound that feels both timeless and unmistakably modern. This album is ideal for listeners who appreciate jazz that swings, breathes, and experiments, moving effortlessly between introspective moods and driving rhythmic momentum.
Makaya McCraven has established himself as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary jazz. Known for projects that blur the boundaries between live improvisation, hip-hop-informed production, and global groove traditions, he has earned international acclaim and a steadily growing fan base across clubs and festivals worldwide. His work is often praised for its emotional depth, rhythmic sophistication, and ability to make complex ideas immediately accessible, attracting both jazz purists and adventurous new listeners.
The CD edition of "Deciphering The Message" offers a focused, immersive listening experience with detailed, dynamic sound that highlights the nuances of McCraven's arrangements and the character of the original Blue Note recordings he reimagines. Carefully sequenced, the album unfolds like a cohesive narrative, making it suitable both for deep, attentive listening and for setting an evocative, sophisticated atmosphere at home.
