Description:Direct from Cuba! Daptone Records is proud to introduce Orquesta Akokán, a big band collective of Havana's top musicians both young and old, joining forces with some of the most creative and spirited talents of New York's Latin music scene. -
2018 release. Akokán is a Yoruba word used in Cuba meaning from the heart, and indeed, every song on the self-titled debut album by Orquesta Akokán feels like a heartfelt gift from the band to the listener. Assembled and led by Cuban vocalist José Pepito Gómez, Orquesta Akokán is a big band collective of the finest musicians on the island, both young and old. It features all-original music and was cut live to tape over a three-day session at Havana s hallowed state-run Estudios Areito. Areito is one of the longest operating studios in the world and where important Cuban records have been made. The album was produced by Jacob Plasse and arranged by Mike Eckroth.
"Orquesta Akokán" on CD is a vibrant, high-energy journey into the heart of classic Cuban music, recorded with the warmth and punch that fans of vintage Latin records love. Performed by the powerhouse ensemble Orquesta Akokán and released by renowned soul and retro-music specialist Daptone, this album captures the explosive spirit of 1950s Havana big bands while sounding fresh and alive. Expect driving mambo grooves, bold horn arrangements, pulsating percussion, and passionate vocals that invite you to dance from the first bar to the last track. The CD format lends itself perfectly to the dynamic, wide-screen sound of the large ensemble, preserving every detail of the brass, rhythm section and lush arrangements.

Orquesta Akokán is a Cuban-American project rooted in the deep tradition of Havana's golden era orchestras. The band is known for reviving classic mambo and Afro-Cuban styles with astonishing authenticity, recorded largely live in the studio to capture the raw energy of a full band playing together. Their work has been praised internationally for its electrifying performances, tight arrangements and heartfelt devotion to Cuban musical heritage, bringing vintage sounds to new audiences across the globe.

Daptone Records, the label behind "Orquesta Akokán", is a Brooklyn-based independent label celebrated for its unwavering commitment to analog recording techniques and timeless soul, funk, and Latin sounds. Known for releases by modern soul and funk icons and for its meticulously crafted productions, Daptone has built a reputation as one of the key labels in the global revival of classic, groove-driven music. Its focus on live recording, analog gear and authentic arrangements makes it a natural home for a project like Orquesta Akokán, where musical craftsmanship and tradition stand front and center.

With its combination of powerful musicianship, vintage production aesthetics and Daptone's trademark attention to sonic detail, this CD is ideal for lovers of Latin jazz, mambo, salsa dura and retro-inspired world music. It's a perfect choice whether you are an audiophile, a collector of classic-sounding Latin records, or simply looking for an album that brings the atmosphere of a Havana dance floor into your living room.
