Description:Standard single disc edition. Digitally remastered edition. Speak & Spell is the debut studio album by the English electronic band Depeche Mode, released in October 1981 by Mute Records. The album peaked at #10 in the UK Albums Chart. This is the band's only album with Vince Clarke, who wrote most of the songs for the band, before departing to form Yazoo and later Erasure. The album is significantly lighter in tone and melody than their later work, a direction which can largely be attributed to Clarke's writing. After he left, Martin Gore took over songwriting duties, writing almost all of the band's material. Later albums written by him would explore darker subjects and melodies. The album title alludes to the then-popular Speak & Spell electronic toy.

"Speak & Spell" on CD is the groundbreaking debut album by Depeche Mode, here presented in a high-quality edition from Rhino Records. Originally released in 1981, this synth-pop classic captures the youthful energy and melodic sensibility that would make the band one of the most influential electronic acts of all time. Tracks like "Just Can't Get Enough" and "New Life" combine catchy hooks, warm analogue synths and danceable beats, defining the sound of early 80s electro-pop. This CD edition offers clear, dynamic sound that highlights the intricate arrangements and vocal harmonies, making it ideal both for rediscovering the album and for new listeners exploring Depeche Mode's origins. The production emphasizes bright keyboards, minimalist drum patterns and memorable choruses, resulting in an album that is at once accessible and artistically distinctive.

Depeche Mode, formed in England at the turn of the 1980s, became one of the most successful and enduring electronic bands in music history. Starting from the synth-pop roots heard on "Speak & Spell", they evolved into darker, more experimental territories, selling tens of millions of records worldwide and filling arenas across the globe. Their influence can be heard in genres ranging from alternative rock to modern electronic music, and they are widely regarded as pioneers of the synth-driven pop sound that shaped an entire era. "Speak & Spell" is the starting point of this remarkable career and an essential document of the band's early, more playful phase.

Rhino Records is renowned for its carefully curated reissues, high-quality catalog releases and respect for musical heritage. The label has built a strong reputation among collectors and audiophiles by focusing on excellent sound, detailed packaging and historically informed releases. With this CD edition of "Speak & Spell", Rhino Records once again underscores its commitment to preserving iconic albums in versions that do justice to the original recordings while meeting contemporary quality standards. For fans of Depeche Mode, synth-pop enthusiasts or anyone interested in the roots of modern electronic music, this CD is a compelling and historically important addition to any collection.
