 | | Description: | Astonishing by Dream Theater, released 28 January 2016.
This version of Astonishing comes as a 2xCD. - 2016 two CD release. The Astonishing is undisputedly the most ambitious undertaking by a band whose cerebral compositions already define the vanguard of progressive hard rock. The Astonishing is enriched exponentially by the integration of a real orchestra and choir, arranged by conductor David Campbell, whose work graces over 450 gold and platinum albums, including watershed releases from Adele, Justin Timberlake, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Beyoncé, and his son, Beck. The Astonishing was produced by John Petrucci with engineering and mixing by Richard Chycki, whose resume includes work with Rush, Aerosmith, and Mick Jagger. Other organic sounds are more abundant than at any point in the band's history, with Jordan Rudess in particular relishing the tones from a grand piano and Hammond organ. Like Tommy or The Wall, the songs on The Astonishing work as both singular compositions and overall story components. Writing the music as a duo, Petrucci and Rudess venture into unexplored corners of their sound without sacrificing their musical identity.Made in U.S.A.
1st press comes with a pin."The Astonishing" is an ambitious concept album by progressive metal giants Dream Theater, released as a double CD that plays like a cinematic rock opera. Across its extensive runtime, the band unfolds a dystopian science-fiction story set in a future where music has been mechanized, and a small group of rebels fights to restore human creativity and emotion. The album is structured in multiple acts and scenes, drawing the listener into a richly detailed narrative world with recurring musical themes, dramatic dynamic shifts and carefully crafted character motifs. Musically, "The Astonishing" combines powerful guitar riffs, virtuosic solos, symphonic orchestrations and melodic vocal lines, showing Dream Theater at their most theatrical and narrative-driven. The production emphasizes clarity and space, allowing the orchestral arrangements and intricate instrumental interplay to shine, while still delivering the impact and precision that fans of progressive metal expect. As a CD release, it invites immersive, start-to-finish listening, with a lavish track sequence that rewards repeated plays and close attention to the unfolding storyline.
Dream Theater, formed in the 1980s, are among the most influential bands in progressive metal, known for their technical prowess, complex compositions and conceptually ambitious albums. Over the decades they have built a loyal global fanbase and earned critical recognition for their musicianship, landmark albums and powerful live performances. Their work has helped define and popularize modern progressive metal, and their catalogue includes several genre-defining releases that continue to inspire musicians worldwide. "The Astonishing" stands out in their discography as a particularly expansive narrative project, underscoring the band's willingness to take risks and push the boundaries of what a metal album can be.
The CD is released under Roadrunner Records, a label renowned for its strong presence in rock and metal. Roadrunner has a long history of working with innovative and influential heavy music artists and is known for supporting ambitious projects that go beyond the mainstream formula. By backing a large-scale concept work like "The Astonishing," the label underlines its commitment to artistically driven releases that combine musical complexity with a strong thematic vision. | | | No. of tracks: |

Eugene S. - 23/Nov/2023 The thirteenth studio album by American progressive metal band Dream Theater, released on January 29, 2016. It debuted in the top ten of nine countries and became the first Dream Theater album to reach number one on the US Billboard Rock Chart. I recommend.
| | Alexander S. - 08/Sep/2020 “The Astonishing” is the thirteenth studio album by Dream Theater, the recognized leaders in progressive metal. It is a not uncommon example of the victory of conceptuality over musicality. The album is double, the first disc ("Act I") lasts about 80 minutes, the second ("Act II") - about 50 minutes, together - as many as 34 tracks. At the same time, the leitmotifs that would tie the album into a single whole are somewhat lacking. The history of the album, "retro-futuristic dystopia", strongly resembles the plot of the song "2112" from the disc of the same name Rush. (As you know, the Canadian trio are almost the main inspirers of Dream Theater.) This creation even attracts a rock opera, although the parts of all the characters are voiced by one person - the band's staff vocalist James Labrie. Imagine a much less heavy and at the same time much less inspired version of “Scenes From A Memory” or the second disc of “Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence” ... There are no “prog metal hits” on “The Astonishing” with catchy riffs like in “Pull Me Under ”, nor the breathtaking bells and whistles of“ Metropolis - Pt. I ”or“ Breaking All Illusions ”, not“ epics ”like“ Octavarium ”or“ The Count of Tuscany ”. And there isn't much prog metal on "The Astonishing" either. This is by far the softest sounding album of the American quintet. On some tracks, you can hear a symphony orchestra, a solo violin, a choir, female vocals, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess uses the piano more than usual. Of course, there is more than enough pomp and pretentiousness, as before, and there is much more sentimentality than before.
| | HYUNG RAE K. - 16/Aug/2019 This is double cd. some song is like rock opera. there is not dream theater original sound and playing. but cd i2 is not bad. try on cd 2 firstly.
| | Marco M. - 14/Aug/2017 Consider this NOT a traditional DT album. It is a musical, with a story and a long time musical description of this. Consider these are two cds and they require you mind disposition and, more than this, lot of free time to enter all passages between songs. What I criticize here is not the idea of making a musical, but the fact musical contents are almost like fregments. We have long musical sequences fragmented in episodes and this, imho, goes to ruin the base of inspirational effort that is main source of listeners' pleasure when listening to music. It's first time since they released an album, I had difficulties to listen at their music.
